Up From the Mud
Mansserei is a practice peculiar to the [[Races of Solevon and Beyond#dragonborn | dragonborn]] of northern Saadtu, considered by many outsiders to be a form of slavery, in which a single dragonborn or a family unit maintains an estate (also called a mansserei), populated by people of other races. To the dragonborn, the size and condition of one’s mannserei is the highest sign of one’s social status.
From the standpoint of a mansek, a resident of a mansserei, the condition of this servitude varies wildly depending on the master, or mansuros. The worst mansserei are crowded, disease-ridden pits where manseks are driven to exhaustion in the service of their mansuros’ decadence. On the other extreme, manssereis exist whose masters see the condition and comfort of their subjects as the supreme expression of their wisdom.
Some conditions are universal, however. The mansuros’ word is final in all aspects of their manseks’ lives: professions are assigned, marriages arranged and justice – often final – is carried out by word of the mansuros. In the best-possible cases, these decisions might be made with the input and advice of the manseks themselves, but in all cases, the mansuros’ word is final. It is not impossible for manseks to be freed of servitude, especially in the case of a particularly sympathetic mansuros in response to a plea, though manseks who leave without permission still find their lives forfeit.
